DBT skills group/training is an integral part of the therapy program, focusing on equipping individuals with practical tools to navigate intense emotions and challenging situations. Skills training is conducted through weekly group sessions and homework assignments. Skills are organized into four modules: Mindfulness skills cultivate non-judgemental awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness skills help individuals observe and describe their experiences, participate fully in the moment, and focus on one thing at a time. Distress tolerance skills help individuals cope with crisis situations without making impulsive or harmful decisions. These skills include distraction techniques, self-soothing strategies, and finding ways to accept and tolerate distress without escalating the situation. Emotion regulation helps clients to understand the functions of emotions, reduce vulnerability to emotional triggers, and enhance emotional well-being. Skills include identifying and labeling emotions, increasing positive emotional experiences, and reducing emotional suffering. Interpersonal effectiveness skills teach individuals how to navigate and improve relationships. These skills include effective communication, setting boundaries, asserting oneself, and finding a balance between self-respect and maintaining positive relationships.
